Mrs. Karr's Second Grade 2009/2010

September

We sifted the compost bin and sorted our red worms from their castings. All of that rich soil was put into the butterfly gardens outside of our classrooms. Next spring we will plant new flowers in them.

Drop Everything and Read is our favorite time of day!

Practicing our math skills with number strips

We worked on identifying the plants in our butterfly gardens to create a map of each plot.

We painted posters of the stages of a rotting log for our study of decomposition.

October

We carefully observed red worms and earthworms. We also did experiments to see if they prefered a wet or dry towel, a light or dark place, a smooth or rough surface.

We had a pumpkin cookie store for math. We could buy a cookie, frosting and candies to decorate it. They looked so awesome. But the best part was eating them!

November

Our new math unit was all about investigating shapes. Some of our work was exploring making rectangles with geoboards and constructing 3-D boxes.
