BES Newsletter for Friday, February 17, 2012

posted Feb 17, 2012 6:41 AM by Marge Audet

Dear Parents,

Being a student is hard work!  I have been thinking about all of the challenges that our students face (within and outside of BES), and I am amazed and impressed with how successful they are able to be each day.  Schools are strange because as soon as a student becomes proficient at something, we make it a little more difficult for them.  I started my career in education as a math teacher and saw the looks of horror from students when they had mastered operations with whole numbers only to discover the existence of fractions, decimals and percents!  In school, each day is different, and each year is more challenging than the next.

In other words, life in school is one of constant change. Helping students learn strategies to successfully handle change is one of the most important things we can do for our students.  At Bradford Elementary our staff works hard to provide students with what they need.  This looks different for each student and is predicated on a caring, knowledgeable staff that is committed to knowing every student.

Being a student is hard work.  As we all know, being an adult is not any easier.  Because life is filled with challenges, and because the elementary years are so crucial, we need to make the most of each school day. Next week’s vacation is coming at a perfect time.  Our community is in need of some well-deserved rest so that we can come back on the 27th, ready to continue our work.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy break.

It’s Tax Season!  Time to Save Money and Eat Well

Now that tax season is here again, remember to spread the word about the important link between the Vermont Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), 3SquaresVT and free school meals. If households earned $50,000 or less in 2011 and have dependent children, they may be eligible for the tax credit, worth up to $5,800, designed to boost the incomes of working families. Eligibility and credit amount is based on tax filing status, income and number of dependent children. Receiving the Vermont Earned Income Tax Credit makes households income eligible for 3SquaresVT, and once approved, then connects them to free school meals, saving them even more money. Many families in Vermont don’t know about the Earned Income Tax Credit or its link to 3Squares and school meals, so please spread the word.  Starting in January, families can call 2-1-1 to find free tax assistance in the community and help applying for 3SquaresVT. Go to www.vermontfoodhelp.com for more information.

BES Newsletter Friday, February 10, 2012

posted Feb 10, 2012 10:01 AM by Marge Audet   [ updated Feb 10, 2012 10:02 AM ]

Dear Parents,

This year is flying by! This week we celebrated our 100th day of school. Next week we will finish up our winter program before we take our February break. As we get ready for the vacation I think it is appropriate to reflect on what we have been working on this year, especially with regard to our Strategic Plan. We have formed (or are in the process of forming) several committees to work on the goals laid out in the strategic plan. Our "Coordinated School Health Team" has been working on nutrition and on the best way to bring more local foods into our cafeteria. We will have our first "Pre-kindergarten Needs Assessment" meeting next week to discuss the possibility of providing those services at Bradford Elementary. We have also been working in partnership with the Bradford Public Library to pilot a foreign language program for our students. Our technology program has also been a major focus this year. Our staff and students have been utilizing iPads in creative ways that are both helping students improve their basic skills as well as providing enrichment opportunities. As a staff, we are thankful to have these tools available to our students and we are looking forward to continuing to invest in our children by providing them with 21st century learning tools. We are continuing our collaboration with Oxbow and Newbury to help ensure that our students are prepared for the next phase of their education. Bradford and Newbury teachers have collaborated to create our new report card. This process has allowed teachers to talk about curriculum and assessments to help ensure that all of our sixth grade students are ready for Oxbow.

Next year is just around the corner and our staff, parents and board are working together to make sure that we continue the good work that we have done this year. We face many challenges but we face them together, as a community, and by working together I know we will continue to succeed.

BES Newsletter Friday, January 20, 2012

posted Jan 20, 2012 8:48 AM by Marge Audet

Dear Parents,

This week our school community experienced a frightening event.  On Tuesday afternoon we were informed that one of our school buses had been in an accident.  Susie Tann and I immediately went to the bus to make sure our students were safe.  Fortunately, the accident, while scary, did not cause serious injuries.  Our students were safely transferred to another bus or dismissed to their parents, and everyone got home safely.

When events like this happen we all react emotionally.  How could we not?  Now that we have had a few days to reflect about what happened, the BES staff is figuring out how we can handle these situations better in the future.  Many of you have called or come in to meet with me to express your concerns and also to make suggestions that will help us improve.  I hope to continue that discussion.

Our school crisis team meets weekly and we will be focusing on this week’s incident for the next few weeks.  If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please come in, call, or send an email.  Although we all work hard to prevent accidents from happening, we need to help our students to be prepared for emergencies when they occur.  Our staff is committed to continuously learning and improving and your input is valued.

Please have a safe and happy weekend.

On Saturday, January 28 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Bradford Farmer's Market at BES, fifth graders Isabella Yelle and Maria Reger will distribute free reusable shopping/grocery bags. Their entertaining video presentation will help others understand the hazards of disposable plastic bag use and help make reusable bags part of our community's sustainability hazards. The Bag Project is sponsored in part by the Bradford Conservation Commission. Contact bagproject@hotmail.com to learn more.

ELECTRONIC GADGETS

This is a good time of year to remind everyone of our restrictions concerning electronic games, CD players, cell phones, special toys, etc.  These items often are expensive and highly valued by all children.  We ask that they not be brought to school since they can be a distraction and can interfere with the focus on learning in the classroom.  We also cannot insure the safety of these items.  If they are lost, stolen, or broken, there will be disappointed children.

BES Newsletter January 13, 2012

posted Jan 13, 2012 6:20 AM by Marge Audet

Dear Parents,

Last year the community of Bradford came together to work on a strategic plan for Bradford Elementary.  Many of you attended the community forum to give your input as to the direction our school should be heading over the next few years.  As a new member of the community and the school, I was thrilled to have a blueprint to guide me through these

first years as principal.

One of the priorities mentioned in the plan is to investigate the feasibility of providing a public preschool at BES.  Mr. Johnson, our superintendent, the BES School Board and I have spent this school year looking at how this process might look here in Bradford.  On the 28th of November, Manuela Fonseca from the Vermont Department of Education attended a board meeting to go over the steps that need to be required as we work on this part of our strategic plan. The first step in the process is to complete a community needs assessment.

Mr. Johnson and the board have created a committee to complete the needs assessment.  If you would like to be part of this process, please contact Mr. Johnson or myself by January 18th.  I look forward to hearing from parents and other community members as we complete the needs assessment.

As always, I hope everyone has a safe and happy three day weekend.

BES Newsletter January 6, 2012

posted Jan 6, 2012 6:34 AM by Marge Audet

Dear Parents,

Several times each week the topic of safety at school comes up.  I often tell students that the most important part of our job is to keep each and every student safe.  We do fire drills so that we will know what to do in an emergency.  We develop and communicate expectations for student behavior throughout the school with a strong emphasis on safety.  We work with students on social and emotional learning so that they have strategies when they do not feel safe.

As we begin this year’s winter program, the safety of your students is on every BES staff member’s mind.  Winter program was one of the first things that our students asked me about last year when they interviewed me.  It is a cherished tradition and we want that tradition to continue... safely.  We know that we will not be able to prevent every bump and bruise, but we will work diligently to do just that.

A big part of being safe is having the right gear for the activities that our students are taking part in.  It is Vermont and it is winter, and jackets, hats, mittens/gloves, socks, snow pants and boots should be part of every child’s school gear.  This week the weather turned colder (by Vermont standards at least ...it was -58 this week in Grayling!), and we had students without winter outdoor gear.  Whether you are the parent of a kindergarten student or the parent of a sixth grader (or both), please make sure to send them to school with the appropriate winter clothing.

I hope that each of you had a restful and safe vacation and that you are getting back into the daily routine of work and school.  Transitions back from vacation are notoriously challenging, but we have had a great week at BES and we’re looking forward to a great winter filled with fun and learning.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns give me a call at 222-4077 or email me at mbrankman@beschool.org.

WINTER ACTIVITY PROGRAM

The Winter Activity Program began today with great excitement. This program is a key to our success to build on the sense of belonging to a school community. Children of all grades are grouped together with staff that they may not have worked with in the classroom. They realize our school is a caring place where children and adults work together cooperatively to learn and have fun. Winters in Vermont can be long and, for some, depressing. This program exposes our kids to a variety of activities they can engage in. In part it is really a Winter Survival Program. The fact that we have so many parents and others volunteer to help is what makes this work.

Please be sure to label all of your child’s equipment and to send your children with layers of warm clothing. We are still looking for volunteers for the program. If you are interested in skiing, snowboarding, x-country skiing, sledding, skating or other various winter activities, please contact Darlene in the front office.

LUNCH ACCOUNTS

Lunch balances are due. Please call if you are unable to pay the balance in full- we can set up a payment arrangement.

PASSENGER SAFETY

Winter driving can be very hazardous when we have unexpected spots of ice or slush on the road.  Vermont law requires car seats for children under eight and everyone should always be wearing a seat belt.  While many children ask to ride in the front seat, back seats are proven to be the safest place for children.  Every parent wants to insure the safety of their child, so please insist they ride in the back seat.

Dear Parents,

This is a very busy time of year for families and sometimes that can lead to increased stress. Please consider it a priority to make sure the holidays are about recognizing the joyous spirit of this time of year. Trying to stretch yourself to cover all the potential obligations can leave you with no energy or patience for being with your children. The best memories are not about the brightly colored boxes under your tree, it is about the positive feelings generated by sharing the moment together.

Dear Parents,

Last night the 4th-6th grade students performed in their annual Variety Show.  Students demonstrated the skills they have learned in PE over the last several weeks.  The students did a fantastic job and I was thrilled that the gym was packed. Next week the K-3rd graders will have their annual concert, and I am looking forward to another opportunity for our students to demonstrate their learning

to the community.

The little bit of snow that fell this week made me think of the communication regarding school closing and late starts.  If the superintendent decides on a delayed start or cancellation, you will receive a call from our Alert Now system.  We have used this system twice this year to make other announcements and to ensure that we have the correct numbers for each family.  If you have concerns about whether or not you are on this list, please call.

We have eight more school days before the winter break, and as everyone gets more and more anxious, it will continue to be important to come to school prepared to learn.  Thanks, in advance, for helping your child be successful by getting a good night’s sleep and eating a healthy breakfast each morning.  I look forward to seeing many of you at next week’s concert and at the upcoming feast as well!

Dear Parents,

This is a very busy time of the year for all of us. The next few weeks will be filled with our variety show, concert and several other events throughout the community.  It is easy to become overwhelmed when we get so busy.  It is easy to lose focus about what is important when we are overwhelmed.  As a staff, our BES team has found that asking the following question helps to keep us on track:

what is best for kids?

Over the last few months, I have had the privilege of getting to know you and your children.  Again and again, I have been impressed at the level of parent advocacy for your students.  Bradford is a community that truly cares about the safety and education of each child.  As our schedules fill up this month and stress levels increase, we will all benefit from taking a moment to think about what is best for our kids.  I hope to see all of you in the days and weeks to come and invite you all to join our conversation about how we can continue serving your students and the

community of Bradford.

Have a safe and wonderful weekend.

BES Newsletter November 18, 2011

posted Nov 18, 2011 10:06 AM by Marge Audet

Dear Parents,

Over the next week families will get together and share food, conversation and time as we pause to celebrate Thanksgiving.  As a school community, we have a lot to be thankful for.  We have wonderful students, dedicated teachers and paraprofessionals.  We also have a plethora of people who volunteer to help our students.  Our support staff (office, kitchen, guidance, nurse and facilities) are amazingly dedicated and efficient people and I feel very thankful for all that they do to make this school run.

Yesterday, we hosted our annual Thanksgiving Feast.  The food was delicious, and the event was well planned and executed.  It was wonderful to see parents and staff joining our students for a meal.  Next week we have school on Monday and Tuesday and then we’ll all get a well deserved rest for a few days.  I hope that everyone has a safe and relaxing holiday and that our students come back energetic and ready to continue working hard as our winter vacation approaches. This will be our last newsletter in November. We will not send home a newsletter next week since it is a 2 day week- and when we return to school after Thanksgiving the next newsletter will go out on Friday, December 2nd.

This week is American Education Week and we certainly are proud of the work that is being accomplished at our school.

HOW TO SAY THANK YOU?

Thank you, gracias, merci, danke schön, gratia…..

Our Thanksgiving Feast was a HUGE success. Thank you to ALL our employees and volunteers who worked so hard to plan, prepare and serve this dinner - 3 employees with the assistance of 7 volunteers. Of the 215 that attended, not one went away hungry! It is amazing the number of hours that go into the preparation and planning and ordering, the set up and clean up, the cooking and serving. Please watch for our Holiday Feast in December and be sure to RSVP.

THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE PTO

Thank you to everyone that donated gift baskets to the PTO Raffle for a new kiln for the Art room. We raised more than $500! And thank you to everyone that purchased tickets. The lucky winners were notified earlier this week by phone, so many smiling winners walked out of BES with their prize baskets. You all are so generous in supporting your PTO.
