Winter vacation has arrived- and the last day of our Winter Activity Program.I encourage children to stay active next week during winter vacation. The experience of the Winter Activity Program has hopefully given kids ideas on how to enjoy winter in Vermont.
On a mission to share the tradition of baking bread, The King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vt., visited the Bradford Elementary School in Bradford, Vt., on Friday, November 20, 2009, to teach over 100 fourth- through sixth-grade students to bake fresh, nutritious bread from scratch through its Life Skills Bread Baking Program. Since that time, students from the 4th-6th grade classes have been baking bread in small groups with Food manager Corinna Magalhaes, Kids Connect Coordinator Jim McCracken and parent volunteers. Each student makes two loaves. One loaf is donated either to the food shelf or the Thursday community dinner at the Methodist Church. The other loaf is brought home for the student and their family to enjoy. Thanks to the generosity of King Arthur, interested students are given the opportunity to bake at home with their family with flour and yeast supplied by the company. As of this week, the students have donated over 50 loaves of bread.
The Board of Trustees of our school are investigating the merits of changing our unique tax status. Most town governments in Vermont collect school taxes and provide the funds to run the school. When the Bradford Academy and Graded School District was incorporated in 1893 it had the authority to collect its own taxes. Only a few schools still continue this process. The Selectboard and the Trustees have charged a committee to investigate the pros and cons of such a change. The agenda for the first meeting is printed below. We hope to have parents involved in this process.
CELEBRATING HEALTHY LIVING and PROMOTING A SMOKE-FREE ZONE
Society now knows that smoking is dangerous to both the smoker and to those exposed to smoke. The OESU Health Curriculum recognizes the importance of education for prevention and early intervention. Bradford Elementary School, in conjunction with the Vermont Departments of Health and Education, wants to help all members of our community lead healthier lives. This fall our efforts will include promoting a Smoke-Free Zone.
