Contest
The 14 members of the Kids Connect Garden Crew worked hard for eight weeks this Fall doing garden chores on the school grounds. They weeded the raspbery patch, cleaning up the butterfly gardens, picked potatoes for the harvest dinner and planted the Witch Hazel bush in front of the school. During their last two weeks, along with their other work, they made four scarecrows for the Midnight Madness contest. First, they brainstormed and sketched the four characters; an Elvis, a Hippie, and fans of the Red Sox and Yankees. Then, with the help from Rebecca Shramm, Lucy Giesing, and Denise Daigle, and materials donated by various parents, teachers and community members including Joe Button, the students were able to create some excellent scarecrows that were displayed around town during the Midnight Madness. Their scarecrows were declared the winners and the students will soon be enjoying pizza thanks to the Colatina Exit. Also thanks to the NAPA Auto Parts store who organized the contest.
Local birds Seen Up Close and Personal David Merker, an amateur Bird Bander from Etna NH, visited the third and fourth grade classes on Friday to show them the many adaptations local songbirds have. He brought in a Blue Jay and a Mourning Dove which he trapped at his home in the early morning. Students were able to see up close the amazing feet of these birds which allow them to sleep standing up and their beaks which can crack and eat sunflower seed at an amazing rate.
Looking for KIDS CONNECT TEAM Members The KIDS CONNECT program, our place-based reform model, is looking for some new Team members, including parent and community members to help with the oversight of this program. We will be meeting on Monday, Nov 15th from 2:30-3:15pm. and then every 2nd Monday of the month for the rest of the year at the same time. The purpose of the Bradford Team is to shape the way the KIDS CONNECT program is organized and implemented at BES and in the community of Bradford, setting meaningful goals and appropriate policies that reinforce the community as a learning environment. The team is involved with advising the coordinator, allocating money for mini-grants (maximum $500 per request: $2000 in 2010-11), watching for opportunities for school-community collaboration and bridge building and representing KIDS CONNECT and place-based learning positively in the school and community. If you have questions, contact Jim McCracken at 222-4077. |
