On Wednesday, April 21, Kids Connect Coordinator Jim McCracken will be leading a seed starting and gardening workshop for students, parents and community members. The workshop will last from 10-11:30 am and be held outside in the BES courtyard (or bad weather, the cafeteria.) Participants will learn; how to start easy vegetables from seed, which vegetables are best started in the ground, the basics of starting a new garden, etc. Everyone will leave with new seeds, thanks to the PTO and a few planted six packs. Bring gloves, old six packs and seeds to swap or share. Please call with questions and/or RSVP to Jim at 222-4077 ext. 241.

Starting April 29th, every Thursday from 2:45-4:15, Lucy Giesing and Jim McCracken will be working with a select group of 4th-6th grade students to help clean up, prepare and tend the BES school gardens. Activities may involve starting seeds, clearing the nature trail, preparing the raspberry beds, dividing perennials etc. Permission slips were sent with students during the week of April 5th and are due back to Darlene on or before April 16th. If you have any questions, please contact Jim McCracken at 222-4077 ext. 241. Thanks.
During the month of February, the fifth grade worked with Ms.Gaudette and Mr. McCracken to create Arbor Day posters for a statewide contest. The theme was “Trees are Terrific and Energy Wise.” All of the students did a wonderful job illustrating how trees influence our energy use. Six posters, created by Tausha W., Alexandria G., Cassidy P, Austin W., Britteny B. and Elana B., were submitted to the district office for judging. Tashua was selected as the district winner. The statewide winner is decided by votes from online voting by students, family and friends and then forwarded on to the National contest.
Starting on Monday, March 15th at 10am, visit this web site www.vtfpr.org/urban/ArborDayPoster.cfmto see all five state entries and vote for your choice of the best poster. Voting begins on then and closes exactly a week later at March 22nd at 10am. The winner will be announced the next day.
Part of the ongoing curriculum at BES is to help children to understand what is expected behavior. Generally this translates into only doing what is healthy for yourself and others. Classroom discussion recently has explored how to keep friends, stay out of trouble, and have fun.
On a mission to share the tradition of baking bread, The King Arthur Flour Company of Norwich, Vt., visited the Bradford Elementary School in Bradford, Vt., on Friday, November 20, 2009, to teach over 100 fourth- through sixth-grade students to bake fresh, nutritious bread from scratch through its Life Skills Bread Baking Program. Since that time, students from the 4th-6th grade classes have been baking bread in small groups with Food manager Corinna Magalhaes, Kids Connect Coordinator Jim McCracken and parent volunteers. Each student makes two loaves. One loaf is donated either to the food shelf or the Thursday community dinner at the Methodist Church. The other loaf is brought home for the student and their family to enjoy. Thanks to the generosity of King Arthur, interested students are given the opportunity to bake at home with their family with flour and yeast supplied by the company. As of this week, the students have donated over 50 loaves of bread.
