SWINE FLU AND SCHOOL SAFETY The School Health Office is currently working within the guidelines set forth by the Vermont Department of Health concerning the current swine flu outbreak. The health department issues Advisories to school nurses that include up-to-date information, recommendations, and specific instructions regarding the assessment of respiratory illness at school to ensure the safety of all students.
As of this morning there are no confirmed cases of swine flu in Vermont. At school we continue to practice good health habits to stop the spread of all germs. These include:
* Washing our hands often and well (for as long as it takes to sing Happy Birthday twice).
* Using alcohol-based hand wipes or gel sanitizers when soap and water is not available.
* Covering our mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
When using a tissue, we throw it away and wash our hands.
If a tissue is not available, we cough or sneeze into our elbo
* Keeping our hands away from our eyes, nose and mouth.
* Cleaning things that are touched often and by many, like door handles and water fountains.
You can do the same things at home and work. In addition:
* Avoid holding, hugging, kissing, or shaking hands with anyone who has a cold or flu symptoms.
* If you get sick with a flu-like illness stay home from work or school and away from others so the
virus does not spread.
* If you need medical attention, call your health care provider first.
You can also plan ahead and be prepared in case the flu comes to our community. We have checklists for families at school who request them or you can go online to www.healthvermont.gov/panflu/SwineFlu.
We will continue to keep you informed. Check this site daily for updates. If you have school related questions please contact the school nurse at extension 226. Thank you.
